Principles of Electric Fencing
- Electric Fencing is more a psychological than a physical barrier i.e. stock learn not to approach a fence wire when power is on.
- The Fencer sends a sharp burst of intense electrical energy along the fence wire.
- Each burst of energy lasts about 0.3 milliseconds.
To work effectively an electric fence must have:
- Enough voltage on the wire to shock the animal.
- Enough joule power in the fencer to drive required voltage along wire.
- Fencer must be correctly installed and earthed.
- Correct insulators, accessories and fence wire should be used.
Electric Fencing in Ireland
Ireland’s moist climate and lush growth, leads to vegetation growth which causes serious load conditions on farm fencing. This coupled with our retention of hedges, and the introduction of the rural environmental protection scheme means there is more pressure on boundary fencing than ever before.
Consequently all PEL Fencers are rated in output joules and are designed to give the required voltage to stop livestock under extreme vegetation growth (100 OHMS resistance is the resistance caused by extreme vegetation growth on fence wire)
- By choosing a PEL Fencer of correct size and following the erection and earthing instructions carefully you
can be sure of years of trouble free operation with perfect livestock control.
- By using PEL lead out cable, insulators and accessories ensure peace of mind and increased profits.
Advantages of Electric Fencing
- Electric Fencing is a low cost effective way of controlling livestock.
- Easy to erect and can be designed to each farmers specific needs.
- Can be either permanent or temporary fencing.
- Increases profits through reduced pugging, better livestock control and improved pasture management.
Fencing Notes
- Use PEL PI36 (2.5mm) cable to connect power terminal on fencer to the field fence wire.
- Use PEL PI36 (2.5mm) cable to connect earth terminal to first earth bar, ordinary 2.5mm high tensile wire
can be used to join earth bars.
The earth site should be in a moist area and at least 10mtrs, 33ft, away from:
- any earth stake from another electrical system.
- any telephone earth stake.
- any water pipes including disused water pipes.
- any buildings using structural steel or reinforced material in the ground.
- NB: never choose an earth site near a dairy or milking parlour.
Erecting and Earthing your fencer

Connect PI36 2.5mm cable from fence terminal to fence wire
Connect PI36 2.5mm cable from earth terminal to first earth bar.
Earth field must be moist and located 33ft from
Any electrical or telephone earth stake.
Any water pipes including disused water pipes
Any buildings using structural steel or reinforcing steel in ground.
N.B. Use 5ft long earth bars at least 12-15ft apart.
